By doing this in my own journal instead of in [profile] penny_lane_42's comments I'm probably turning this into a meme, but it's kind of awesome and I think deserving of meme status.

The idea is that we all watch different shows, even when we all watch the same ones. BtVS and Joss fan [profile] penny_lane_42 posted about the shows she's watching, and got my thinking about the ones I watch.

When it looked like I was watching Gargoyles I was actually watching Blond, Bland Gentlemen Have More Fun Serving Amoral Megalomaniacs, and The Magnificent Seven was absolutely The Con Man with a Soft, Mushy Centre he Resents.

What appeared to be a book about a boy named Harry Potter was in fact The Baggage of Severus Snape and A Werewolf Tries Very Hard Not To Be Happy, For Everyone Else's Sake. The last could of books were also Dumbledore Plays Wizard Chess and You Are All His Pieces.

From the beginning, The West Wing was Lemon Lyman and his Quirkily Brilliant and Impervious Assistant Fall In Love with the occasional CJ Is Awesomer Than Pretty Much Everybody, Bitter, Angry, Sad Toby Tries to Save the World with Words, and Jed and Leo: It's Good Friends Who Keep Us Sane spinoffs. The first two seasons are definitely Dialogue That Plays Like Music, and that show was the first one that made me realize dialogue can be just as flexible and brilliant and god-damn evocative as narration.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was primarily I Love Allegory and Metaphor Like You Cannot Even Believe and Important Stories in Dark Places. Season Two became A Librarian Was Not How I Thought I'd End Up, But Somewhere Where I Was Always Headed, while Season Three was The Mayor and Faith Need Each Other, and Are Good People Gone Astray, Really. Season Four was, to my surprise, mostly When Did Xander Become So God Damn Brilliant, and Why Didn't I Notice Until Now?. Season Five was definitely My Sister is More Important than the World Entire, and That Is Just Fact so Live With It, and Season Six I watched Buffy Learns to Feel Again after getting Really Good at Not. In the end, it turned out I was also watching A Girl Who Forgets How To Be a Girl Because she Has To Be a Man the whole time.

When I watched Doctor Who with David Tennant I was watching The Loneliest Man in the Universe Searches for Distraction That Usually Makes it Worse. When Season Four started it absolutely became Donna is Awesome and the Doctor Needs Her More Than Anyone Else in the Universe. I also admit to watching the Unashamed Sci Fi Crack is Cracktastic Win show on a regular basis and loving it the most.

Torchwood was mostly Torchwood Makes Everything Worse, But In a Good and Often Hilarious Way but also sometimes Sex and Love and All the Awkward, Strange, Niggly Spaces In Between Make Us Human. CoE was, by and large, Gwen Finds Her Awesome.

I watch Criminal Minds for Garcia Is My Hero In All Ways, but also for Women, Even When They're Victims, Are Not Just Victims and Playing With Gender Roles and Identities in Smart Ways.

Dollhouse started out as Victor and Sierra and Nothing Else Matters, but then suddenly and wonderfully became Topher Doesn't Want to Hurt Anyone Else But Can't Help It Because That's Who He Is.

There are others, of course. I could go on forever, but these are the ones that leap immediately to mind. What shows within shows have you watched? What tinted glasses do you wear when you watch or listen or read the stories you do? I'm intrigued by this discussion and by discovering other people's points of view.

I feel as thought it's been a while since I did a meme. Therefore here is the first sentence of my first entry from every month last year (otherwise known as That Meme Everyone Else Is Doing).

2009 in summary via first sentences )

2009 was, over all, pretty good to me, what with the new job, moving into the Charming Apartment of Win, and adopting Velcro-Cat. I certainly posted more in 2009 than I ever have before, that's for sure.

  • My office is like a ghost town. So many people on holiday.
  • Two-weddings is one wedding too many for one month. These things are very expensive and, even when you're not in the party, suck up a lot of time. There are showers and stagettes and gifts and RSVPs and dress buying and then the actual wedding day itself. I generally have a good enough time at the showers and the stagettes -- at the one I went to on Sunday we made sushi and it was awesome -- but it's a bit draining, meeting and socializing with a load of people I don't know very well or at all at the frequency I've been doing it at this month. No more weddings until B's next summer, okay?
  • My cat is becomming a big bed hog. Given one human-sized creature and one cat-sized creature, I would expect they would occupy a proportional ratio of space each. As it turns out the inverse ratio rules supreme here. The things no one thinks to tell you before you venture into cat ownership. He also keeps trying to sleep on my back and meows crankily at me when I shake him off.
  • I woke up unusually early this morning, so I watched last night's True Blood and had a leisurely breakfast. I may be a little bit in love with Godric. And Eric's... Ericness... continues to amuse and delight me. I also may ship Bill/Jason now.
  • Um, I'm going to need a Doctor Who beta in the next week or so if my writing pace keeps up as it has been. Any takers? I need someone to tell me whether or not I'm writing Ten at all correctly.
  • Am finishing up the Five Things meme. Anyone want to add anything to it before I post?

Obviously this means I should, too. This weekend went from super busy to suddenly very boring, so give me something to do plzthx?

Ask me my fannish Top Five [Whatevers]. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! And I will answer them all in a new post. Possibly with pictures.

(I am lazy and don't want to re-format this for my Dreamwidth layout. Therefore, please click here to go to the Livejournal post to see the finished photo meme.)

I haven't posted a meme in ages and so have swiped this one from [ profile] wild_sibyl:

1. Comment in this entry with absolutely anything that you are curious of / want to see of my real life.
2. I shall photograph every requested aspect and post them tomorrow.

Here are all my collected facts for that meme I posted the other day. They were fun to write up, so if there's someone not on this list you want to ask me my personal canon about, leave their name in the comments and I'll add it on!

Harry Potter Characters )
How I Met Your Mother Characters )
West Wing Characters )
Doctor Who Characters )

Shamelessly stolen from [ profile] _thirty2flavors:

Give me a character and I will give you at least five facts about them according to my own personal canon. This can range from their birthday, favorite color or even their earliest memory up to what they had last night for dinner.

afterthree: (nom nom om nom)

My two theatre projects are officially finished with and out of the way now, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little relieved. It was fun to stretch my theatre muscles, but right now in the midst of the Impossibly Roaming Work Deadline it was just too much.

Family Day holiday Monday was glorious in that I slept until noon and then did basically nothing all day but lounge around in pajamas, nap, and catch up on TV, which, after the chaos and panic of Saturday and Sunday, was exactly what I needed.

Getting my hair cut today, and boy does it need to be cut badly. It's shaggy and difficult to manage and pretty much devoid of personality. I'm not sure what the plan is for the cut today, but it will be something different. I would say stay tuned for photos, but it seems I'm pretty bad at remembering to actually do that so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I also need to buy several pairs of new work-appropriate pants. This is not exactly what I'd like to spend my money on right now, but currently I'm living in two pairs and one of them is starting to show the wear. I'm thinking maybe I should bite the bullet and buy a few more suits instead of just pants. More expensive, but it would be nice to have more than one suit jacket and there's some decent spring stuff out right now. New pants/suits is my lunch-hour/in between work and hair cut mission today. I'm hoping for sales.

Meme! I signed up for this one from [ profile] train_lindz a week or so ago and haven't had the time to do it until now.

Comment on this post and I will give you five subjects/things I associate with you. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

HOW MANY ICONS DO YOU HAVE: Very many off LJ. Currently 96 of those are available for me to use on this journal.
OUT OF HOW MANY AVAILABLE ICONS SPACES: 110, though I hear some people have up to 195 slots! I can has, plzthx?
IF YOU COULD BUY SPACE FOR MORE, WOULD YOU: Probably. Though I've never capped out the 110 slots I have, so to be fair I'm not sure it would be money well spent.
DO YOUR ICONS MAKE A STATEMENT: Um...? Maybe that I'm quite a lot in love with Doctor Who and Ten right now? Or that I like icons?
WHAT FANDOM DO YOU HAVE THE MOST ICONS OF: Doctor Who right now, for sure.
AND THE SECOND MOST: Uh.... That's a very good question. Maybe West Wing.
WHAT SHIP DO YOU HAVE THE MOST ICONS OF: It's a tie. I have one Josh/Donna icon and one Nine/Rose icon. That's it, folks.
ARE YOUR ICONS MADE MOSTLY BY OTHER PEOPLE: Yes, though there are a handful of ones I made up there, too.
DO YOU MAKE ICONS: Occasionally, when the spirit moves me. Not in the sheer quantity most other icon-makers do, though.
ARE THEY ANY GOOD: Um... yes? I like them.
ANIMATED ICONS ARE: They are generally annoying and I don't use them very often. Never on my posts, very occasionally in comments. There are two I'm quite fond of, but I use them very sparingly.

Also, I got my first roomie Christmas card from [ profile] moon_dancing yesterday! *puts card in place of honour on coffee table*

1. Bold the names of characters you’d definitely fuck.
2. Italicize the names of characters you might fuck after a little persuasion.
3. Leave the characters who don’t do anything for you alone.
4. Put a question mark (?) after the characters you’ve never heard of.
5. Strike the characters you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole.
6. Add four of your own at the end.

The List )
I definitely added more than four to the end.  I suppose the meme-police will come after me now.

afterthree: (amelie)
1. Leave me a comment saying, “Interview me.”
2. I will respond by asking you 5 questions of a very personal nature.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed you will ask them 5 questions.

And tomorrow, the grand S - Z finale!

afterthree: (like dessert spoons)
Well, at long last, I bring you the much anticipated Alphabet Meme.  Well, a third of it anyway.  Stay tuned tomorrow and Friday for parts two and three.  *is determined to finish the meme by Friday*  See?  See my determined face?  *makes determined face*

A to I )

Stay tuned, folks, for the rest of the letters.  J through R comin' your way sometime tomorrow to a friend feed near you!

afterthree: (ten points for destroying my soul)
As per the rules of the meme, I cannot post until all the letters are assigned topics, and we still have 13 10 8 6 5 letters left as yet untopic-ed.  So get topic-ing.  (Huzzah for suffix-abuse!)

I did see Sex and the City on Friday night, and not knowing too terribly much about the franchise as a whole, I have to say the movie did for me everything I hoped it would, which was to deliver 2+ hours of designer label clothing, purse, and shoe porn.  There were even some unexpected but appreciated gratuitous hat scenes, as well as a shiny-wonderful walk-in closet that made me all warm and fuzzy inside.  I practically needed a cigarette by the time the credits started to role.

There was some pre-movie drama with the group of girls I went to the theatre with, but I suppose that's expected when 500 16-25 year-old females are crammed into a tiny space with only four or five males that have no hope of balancing out the extreme amounts of estrogen.  There was seat-saving.  There was seat-stealing.  There was catty-talk and some girls almost got kicked out.  In the end, cooler heads prevailed and lesser seats were taken by those who had been wronged in an effort to ensure no one had their tires slashed at the end of the night.  Now don't get me wrong, I love females and being female and interacting with females, but, sometimes, girls are just... ugh.

Swiped from [personal profile] rm .

1. It begins with a list of all 26 letters of the alphabet.
2. Comment with something for me to talk about that starts with one of those letters. Make me babble about anything -- TV shows, actors, actresses, food, etc. Be creative. :D
3. One topic per letter -- it's like a claims list! I will cross off letters as topics appear. If you'd like to make more than one request (for different letters), go for it. Just don't steal all the letters.
4. I will post a new post talking about all 26 topics given to me!
